Sunday papers are buzzing with transfer rumors as Chelsea’s massive squad overhaul continues. And one key player at the center of that change is Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Mendy has lost his place in the Blues goalkeeping lineup under Graham Potter and has only started two Premier League games this season because Kepa Arrizabalaga is out injured. That puts Mendy’s future at Stamford Bridge into question; he could potentially be sold during the January transfer window.
Goalkeeper
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been told he can leave the club this summer. Under Graham Potter, Mendy has lost his spot as first choice between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.
Since Potter’s arrival, Mendy has started just two Premier League matches this season and kept one clean sheet – being overtaken by Kepa Arrizabalaga for the Blues’ number 1.
Chelsea are believed to be struggling to lock him into a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge, as club owner Todd Boehly wants any deals that don’t last two years. According to reports, Chelsea are trying to recruit Brighton shot-stopper Robert Sanchez as an eventual successor for Mendy when the season starts next year.
Kepa Arrizabalaga
Chelsea have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this season, but none has quite lived up to expectations like Kepa Arrizabalaga. Signed for an incredible world-record fee from Athletic Bilbao, the Spaniard has been an incredible success since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
His performance in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against Aston Villa was particularly impressive and helped secure their position as a top four side. Graham Potter praised him for making saves that denied Jacob Ramsey and Danny Ings, reinforcing that Spain keeper is on track to becoming Chelsea’s first choice keeper.
Kepa was an impressive performer in the Champions League, but there are doubts over his future at Chelsea; reports suggest he could leave in the summer. According to The Daily Mail, Thomas Strakosha has been identified as the likely successor for Kepa at Stamford Bridge after making 208 appearances for Lazio during his time there.
Chelsea’s big squad revamp
Chelsea have already begun a major squad revamp this summer, with Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Charly Musonda and Danny Drinkwater all departing for other clubs.
Todd Boehly, owner of LA Dodgers fame, is in the final stages of purchasing the club. As such, there has been an abundance of transfer activity at the club this window. So far they have acquired winger Mykhailo Mudryk, striker Enzo Fernandez and loanee Joao Felix from FC Porto.
Though there have been some impressive signings, there have also been a few who haven’t quite lived up to expectations. Benoit Badiashile was unexpectedly left out of the Champions League squad after joining Juventus for PS35m earlier in the month yalla shoot.
Mendy’s future
Edouard Mendy’s future at Chelsea is in jeopardy after being told he can leave the club this summer. The 30-year-old goalkeeper has been largely sidelined since Graham Potter took over from Thomas Tuchel last September, with Kepa Arrizabalaga cementing himself as the Blues’ first choice keeper.
He has returned to Senegal at the World Cup, but is finding it difficult to make an impact at Stamford Bridge. After starting just two Premier League matches this season, his form has been inconsistent at best.
Last summer, Mendy rejected a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge and AC Milan, French clubs Monaco and Nice are keeping tabs on his situation. His contract will expire in 2022 and it could be that Chelsea look to offload him when the transfer window reopens this summer.
